The rest of the day passed without incident. Calvin had to work late, so I ate alone at the apartment, trying not to feel too put out that we couldn’t spend the evening together. In fact, he was working the late shift all week until he went on leave after Thursday, which meant I was going to be left to my own devices a lot more in these days leading up to the wedding than I would have preferred. Not for the first time, I reminded myself that Calvin’s job carried a lot more responsibility than mine, and that I needed to be a little more accommodating.

At least my mother, Tom, and his family would be arriving on Wednesday. Although I had to admit I really wasn’t looking forward to dealing with Madison or Staci, we already had plans to all go out for dinner Wednesday evening after they got to town, so I figured I could slog my way through Monday and Tuesday, even deprived of Calvin’s company as I was.

Archie was still acting subdued…for him…but I knew not to push things. He’d already been on edge, knowing that our quiet little life here at the apartment was going to come to an end in the very near future, and this whole situation with Victoria definitely wasn’t helping. I could only hope that once the wedding was over and she’d headed back home to Scottsdale, he’d eventually be able to adjust to our new normal.

On Tuesday, I was mostly glad that I’d only have to get through this last day at the store, and then I could devote all my energies to the wedding…and to the mystery of Susanna Bigelow and why her spirit lingered at the mansion. My research trip to the library had been a complete bust, and I didn’t really know where to go from here.

That afternoon, my phone rang — my cell phone, and not the store’s landline. This wasn’t so unusual, because I’d already fielded calls from my mother, Hazel, and Victoria earlier that day, mostly to reassure them that yes, I wouldn’t be at the store after this and they’d be able to get my undivided attention.

This call, though, wasn’t from anyone in the wedding party. No, it was from Luisa Olvera, my mother’s housekeeper.

A tingle of anxiety made its way down my spine, even as I told myself Luisa could be calling about something completely innocuous.

Still, this was the day she was cleaning the house in preparation for the arrival of my California relatives…which meant she’d been at the mansion all by herself.

“Hi, Luisa,” I said after I swiped my phone’s screen to accept the call. “What’s up?”

“I didn’t want to bother you this close to your wedding, Miss Selena,” she said. Luisa always called me that; I had to wonder whether the practice would continue after I married Calvin, or whether she’d come up with some other way to address me. Her Guatemalan accent was still strong after more than thirty years in Globe, but her English was impeccable.
